Will County's Oldest Community
Plainfield traces to 'Walkers' Grove,' a settlement on the DuPage River established by 1828 when James Walker built a sawmill there; the 'Halfway House' inn followed in 1834 on the Chicago-Ottawa stagecoach road, and the Village of Plainfield was platted immediately north that same year by Chester Ingersoll, with the combined area known as Plainfield by 1841 -- making it the oldest community in Will County.
An Old Core, and a Lot of Rebuilding Since
Because Plainfield's downtown core predates the rest of Will County's development by a full generation, while a large share of its residential housing -- including entire subdivisions rebuilt after the well-documented August 1990 tornado -- is far newer, a mold assessment here has to separate genuinely century-plus-old framing from modern rebuild-era construction rather than assume one age applies townwide.
